Welcome!

Hello! Welcome to my e-Portfolio. Here you can find information about me and my professional life at Cal Poly Pomona. You will find pages about my goals, courses I’ve taken, what I’ve learned outside of the classroom, my life experiences, and my resume. On the left side is the navigation menu, which links to each of these pages.

About Me

My name is Samantha Boardman. I am a fifth year at California Polytechnic State University, Pomona, (Cal Poly) majoring in Apparel Merchandising and Management (AMM), Production option, Fashion Design Management track, and will be receiving my Bachelor of Science in June 2013.

I was born in Pomona, and have lived in the area my whole life. I grew up taking art classes, and in ninth grade I discovered Adobe Photoshop. Eleventh grade I learned about Illustrator, and I’ve loved the two programs ever since. Around the same time I discovered Japanese street fashion, and instantly fell in love. I also have a strong passion for languages, and can pick them up easily. I have taken four years of Spanish in high school, and one quarter in college; two years of Japanese among watching shows in Japanese; and was taught Hebrew growing up.

When I began college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do as a career, so I began my journey in chemistry to become a pharmacist. Partway through my second year, I realized this was not where I wanted to be, and it was time for a change. I learned that Cal Poly had a fashion program, and decided to try it out. My first class was AMM 101, Introduction to the Fashion Industry, and I quickly began learning there’s a lot more to the apparel industry than I knew. Since that first class, I’ve learned many skills and techniques that I will be able to use in the industry, and I hope to always be learning something new.

Thank you for stopping by!

My Goals

What did you / do you want to get out of your experience in AMM/ at CPP?

I came to Cal Poly because I knew it was a good school with great programs, and it was also close to home. At first I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but when I found AMM, I knew it’s where I wanted to be. I started out by just taking a few AMM classes, and quickly realized I would learn a lot more than I thought I would about the industry. Since the beginning of my experience in AMM, I was constantly learning more about industry technology and terminology, fabrics, big designer names and companies. I’ve even had the wonderful opportunity of visiting companies such as VF Corporation and Critical Mass. I think the AMM program at Cal Poly is excellent and really has taught us how to prepare for the world outside of school.

Relevant Courses

Apparel Merchandising and Management

Courses - AMM Core: AMM 270 - Visual Merchandising / Store Design

There are a few different classes that I have very much enjoyed during my time at Cal Poly. Under the “courses” pages, I will talk about 4 of these, including an AMM Core course, an AMM Option course, a Support Course, and a General Education course.
I do warn in advance these are a bit long.

General Education

AMM Core:
AMM 270 - Visual Merchandising / Store Design
Understanding of design principles, color theory, space, and lighting in relation to display areas and interior design of stores. Analysis of their use in merchandising of goods and customer appeal. Written and oral projects. Application of a computer graphics program. Concurrent enrollment required.

This class was very interesting to me because I learned how people do visual merchandising, and the elements that go into creating an excellent display. In this class, we had three group projects that utilized our teamwork, Adobe Illustrator, creativity, and writing skills to analyze and create visual displays.

Courses - AMM Option: AMM 410/A - Apparel Production Development I

AMM Option:

Beginning of capstone experience for senior production students. Development of patterns, prototypes, and samples. Use of CAD technology in development of pattern blocks and first patterns. Application of pattern theory for fit and pattern verification. Application of apparel industry pattern marking and assembly. Evaluation of standard and custom fit.

In this class, we learned how to use TUKA Tech and create our own patterns so we could make a skirt and blouse for our measurements. It was interesting to learn how patternmaking works, and all the small details that go into it in order to make a garment fit correctly.
We started with pattern blocks, and used different techniques that our professor taught us in order to modify the block to our liking. We added elements such as pleats, gathering, darts, and pintucks.

Courses - Support Course: MHR 450 - Leadership

There are a few different classes that I have very much enjoyed during my time at Cal Poly. Under the “courses” pages, I will talk about 4 of these, including an AMM Core course, an AMM Option course, a Support Course, and a General Education course.

General Education Course
KIN 370 - Stress Management for Healthy Living
A holistic approach to stress management; preventing and/or alleviating physical symptoms of stress; exploration of the mind/body connection.

In this class, I learned a lot from this class about stress, what causes it, and how to deal with it. It wasn’t too difficult a class, but I think I made a very good decision in taking it because of everything I got out of it. I was lucky to have taken this class as a lecture and not online, because as opposed to the online course, we were able to do progressive muscle relaxation and yoga – I’ll explain more in a bit. My professor was a character, and had a lot of fun teaching this course, so it made it much more interesting and entertaining for us students.

Learning Outside the Classroom

How are you active at CPP outside of the classroom?

I generally find classwork keeps me busy at school, but I do enjoy helping out outside of the classroom where I’m able to.

Life Experiences

The Flame Broiler

Between March 2009 and March 2012, I held down my first real job working as a cashier at The Flame Broiler. It was here that I learned how to talk with customers and interact with my coworkers. I learned a lot of people skills on both ends. With my coworkers, I had to communicate to make sure the orders came through correctly and in a reasonable amount of time. I learned to communicate with my boss about things the store needed, customers that were asking for him, and other inquiries that required my boss’s attention. I also became skilled at speaking with customers and putting smiles on their faces by getting their order to them quickly and making small talk. I was happy I was able to stay with this company for a long time, and my boss always complimented me in that for the entire time I was there, he never had any problems arise with me. I was proud to be able to say that I worked efficiently at my job and got along with everyone I encountered.
